Sarah Lucas Counselling

About me

Hi, I'm Sarah

I know how difficult it can be to ask for help. For me, a lot of that apprehension came from the thought of being the one in the spotlight. So, if you’re feeling nervous right now, I get it.

What I soon realised was just how special the therapeutic relationship can be.

To put it simply:

My experiences shaped how I work

In my own therapy, I came to understand the power of being heard by someone who had no personal stake in my life, yet genuinely cared about my wellbeing. They didn’t have a magic wand — and I know now that wouldn’t have helped me in the long run anyway.

What did make a difference was being heard, validated and carefully challenged, alongside gaining practical skills and tools to manage life more effectively.

I don’t have — or want — a magic wand either. But I am here to offer you the same steady support and a willingness to tackle the hard stuff together.

I believe

The relationship you have with your therapist matters more than anything else.

And yes — the research backs that up

Get To Know Me

A few things that have shaped how I work and who I am outside the therapy room.

I was diagnosed with ADHD later in life

The suggestion that I might be neurodivergent took me by surprise, but ultimately, it felt like the last piece of the puzzle. It helped me to understand my unique quirks and challenges.

My experience is my own, just as yours is yours. I share this because it shapes how I work as a therapist. I recognise how unsettling it can be to discover something so fundamental about yourself as an adult. It can change how you see yourself and your life — sometimes in ways that feel freeing, and at other times uncomfortable.

I love a good metaphor

Clients often tell me they find them helpful for making sense of things or for seeing experiences that feel confusing in a new light. (You’re very welcome to tell me to stop if they’re not your thing!)

When I’m not working, you can find me

Hiking, watching the Great British Bake Off, dog-sitting for friends or scouring the internet for more random creative activities to add to my ever-expanding craft cupboard.

My Core Values

Authenticity

I aim to bring my true self into our sessions, and my hope is that you will feel comfortable doing the same. It will help me to fully support you, but more importantly, you’ll get more out of the experience.

Collaboration

I care deeply about my clients and want the best for them. We’ll work together; however, you’re the expert in your own life. I can offer professional insights and curiosity, but you decide what feels right for you.

Compassion

Shame, self-doubt, and constantly beating ourselves up can keep us feeling stuck. I’ve seen how much can shift when someone is met with openness and understanding, rather than judgement.

Patience

Changing long-held beliefs or patterns can be tough. It’s normal to feel like you’re going in circles or need reminders. Progress sometimes looks slower than we expect — and that’s okay.

Qualifications & Training

I am an Accredited Registrant of the National Counselling and Psychotherapy Society and hold an Advanced Diploma in Counselling.

I’m committed to ongoing learning and regularly engage in further training and professional development.

Areas I’ve focused on more recently include intergenerational trauma, Transactional Analysis, and working therapeutically with autistic adults and those with ADHD.

If you'd like to know more about how I work

If you’d like a bit more detail on how I work and what sessions are like, you can read more on my What to Expect page, or explore the areas I work with on my Counselling Services page.

If you’re wondering whether we might be a good fit, the best next step is usually a short, informal conversation.
